hot and bothered for heywood-wakefield?

If you find Heywood-Wakefield indeed irresistible, I do believe I have the cure. Head immediately to Woody's Antiques in Orange. There is enough Hey-Wake in this establishment to bring even the most stoic mid-century modernist to tears.

An unassuming store front for sure.

But the inside? It's all Hey-Wake, top to bottom.

Rebecca's 5 Point Rating Scale (1-not-so-great and 5-fabulous):
  • Store Size / Inventory - 5 (Heywood-Wakefield as far as the eye can see, upstairs, downstairs everywhere.)
  • Merchandise Quality  - 5 (Ooh la la, many of the pieces are beautifully refinished.)
  • Organization - 5 (Items are more or less grouped together, dining with dining, sculptura with sculptura, etc.)
  • Pricing - 2 (OUCH, these are premium prices for premium goods. But they do offer free delivery, flexibility on the pricing, and lay-a-way!)
  • Service - 5 (Owners are usually at the counter. They know their Hey-Wake and are super helpful.)
Total Rating is 4.6 (out of 5 stars)

Overall, this store is absolutely worth a trip. It is truly a mid-century modern must see. Personally I have never viewed so much Hey-Wake all in one place. It simply takes your breath away.

First we bring you all the bent rattan Heywood Wakefield. Perfect for someone's tiki lounge patio or a tropical Southern California bedroom. The bent rattan was the first furniture manufactured by Heywood or Wakefield (forget who), in the late 1800's.

Overhead view of the beautiful bentwood bedroom sets (say that three times fast). Nice twin bed frames would look cute in a kids' room.

This young lady perched at the head of a stairs, frankly, startled me.

From the indisputable source of the truth, Wikipedia:

The Heywood-Wakefield Company is a US furniture manufacturer established in 1897. It went on to become a major presence in the US and its older products are considered valuable collectibles. The wicker styles drew on the Aesthetic Movement and Japanese influences; simpler designs arose in the wake of the Arts and Crafts Movement. During the 1930s and 1940s Heywood-Wakefield began producing furniture using sleek designs based on French Art Deco.

Speaking of art deco, the Sculptura line from Heywood-Wakefield is oh so art deco and fifties. Woody's has a ton of it. I just couldn't get enough of the flair drawer fronts which form the pulls.

And now the more traditional Heywood-Wakefield. Tons and tons of it. In Orange County, a Craigslist search for Heywood-Wakefield brings up only six items. This line is becoming rare, as it has become quite vogue.

Woody's has twenty or so of these old ads framed in a stairwell. The visit would be worth it just, to see these ads alone.

Pretty buffet. I love this champagne finish. Woody's refinishes Hey-Wake pieces beautifully.

And finally, the dining sets. And the chairs. Lots and lots of chairs. Woody's even carries traditional and original fabrics to refinish the chair bottoms.

All of this delightful mid-century modern is in the heart of beautiful downtown Orange, California, established in 1873. Which is kind of old for a city in California. Here is the Orange Circle.

Facing North East towards Woody's.

Immediately off this circle are all kinds of antique and vintage shops. And a ton of restaurants. This little area makes for a wonderful afternoon for the vintage sleuth.

  4. Does anyone know of someone in Arizona that buys and refinishes Heywood Wakefield? We are looking to sell a hutch & buffet with the triple crown glass (M1547 on M1543) and a table with 6 chairs (M1559 with 4 of M1554-A & 2 of M1554-C). It's in pretty good shape, but would need refinished. But I've only found refinishers in Maryland, Florida, and California.

    1. I live in AZ and have refinished some Heywood Wakefield. What you could do is order the stain and varnish online and see if someone can refinish. The real trick to refinish is having time and supplies to complete. Once the product is stripped or sanded it is pretty easy to refinish with the stain and varnish. Check out suppliers of hey-wake for original stain and varnish. It really works. The difficult part is prepping the wood.
