#psmw 2014 signature home tour: glamorous mid-century treasure, herbert burns arhcitect

The 2014 Palm Springs Modernism Week Signature Home tour did not disappoint. Honestly, they outdid themselves this years. Seven amazing homes in three hours. Mom and I moved fast.

With a mail box like this, how could you go wrong? Not to be a tease but this landscaping is VERY similar to something we have going on, and I will reveal when all is complete. Okay 95% complete. We never get to 100%. Ever.

The first home on the tour was a dazzler. Oh the pool. Oh the view. Oh the pool. Am I repeating myself?

What a treasure. This modest home is attributed to Herbert Burns, also famous in Palm Springs for the Orbit In. This home was originally built for comedian Joan Davis in 1949. Honestly, I had never heard of her as she died before I was born. Lots of people have.

This is actually the front of the house. The sides and back are tight to the fence. The house is essentially a rectangular box facing this expanse of pool and lawn area. All main rooms go along this expanse of windows... office/bedroom, living room, dining, master.

I spy a Noguchi. During my sojourn through mid-century modern homes, I often notice and point out the requisite Noguchi coffee table. I finally found someone more sick of them than me. Funny, funny blog. Worthy of more commentary another time.

The house recently sold in February 2013 for $723K. It's first Zillow listing was in 2000 for $212K. This gives you a very good idea of the appreciation of Palm Springs mid-century modern homes. It was sometime in the 90's that people clued into what treasures were buried out in the deserts of Palm Springs. Honestly, in the late 80's, Palm Springs was a broken down dump. My friends and I all went and laid by the pools in the golf resorts down the highway in Rancho Mirage. Little did we know.

We got your Saarinen and we got your Eames right here. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Functional and effective kitchen. With a George Nelson wall clock. But of course.

I am gonna guess the counter-top is Blizzard Ceasarstone. We used this for our bathrooms.

And speaking of bathrooms. This is so similar to our remodeled bathrooms that it is spooky. Just when you think you are being original...

The house is listed as having 3 bedrooms and 3 baths, and being a little over 1,500 square feet. It felt sort of smallish like a typical mid-century modern. Ours was the exact same size, with one less bathroom when we moved in. But the lot. The lot! The lot is over 10,000 square feet which is HUMONGOUS in California. And with that beautiful pool area, the real living goes on outside. For sure.

Master bedroom on the corner with a nod to 50's tiki.

Do you spy the Shag?

This bedroom had quite the tribute to Liza Minnelli. Did anyone see Liza at the Oscar's and catch Ellen's sly joke? Caught me off guard for sure. But so funny.

Ya have to kind of look closely at this little neon orange box. There are all kinds of fun toys and original Peanut's art above.

The office has the cutest little red lamps.

I really dig these mid-century modern architectural prints. Great decorating idea.

And a Herman Miller bench. This place is shock full of beautiful furniture.

Which brings me back to the pool. Our tour brochure says the current owners had the pool designed by architect Lance O'Donnell of o2 Architecture and built by Architectural Blue. Really nice work.

  1. That pool is like a David Hockney painting. Just glorious. And I agree with you on the Noguchi tables, btw. With all the gorgeous choices out there...

    1. Honestly, I love the house and the decor to pieces. Especially the pool. Thanks for Hockney comment. You are right on. But I am getting jaded after all the mid-century modern home touring. There are some pieces that you see over and over again. Because they are classic and beautiful...yes.. but I am starting to kind of have a bias for things off the beaten trail, less popular with the masses.

    2. My first thought also was Hockney. There's a big oil of a Palm Springs couple by their house in the Art Institute of Chicago's Modern Wing. this looks just like it.

  2. I love that tiled fireplace, and I wouldn't refuse the offer to relax by that pool!

    1. The pool in particular was so inviting. I am sure all breakfasts are taken poolside and many, many cocktail hours are had poolside. Really relaxing feel and the views of the mountains are astounding. The entire area has a large hedge around it, so completely private.

  3. How about some external photos of the home ?

    1. There aren't that many... basically visitors would only see the side that faces the pool. That is the front door! The rest is backed up to hedge. Good question and I failed to explain this.

  4. Oh gosh. I want to be in that chair looking out at that view right about now. Beautiful.

  5. Thanks again - the dining and living areas w/ the pool area beyond are my favorite scenes. Though the coffee table and patio furnishings towards the end rank up there...has me thinking of more desert / water conservation-friendly ways to treat a larger area than a lawn.

    1. The pool scene is a painting. I bet twilight is the best.
