vintage shop labor day glass treasure and a church

So I bragged yesterday about "discovering" a new vintage modern retro shop, Out of Vogue, in Fullerton, over last Labor Day weekend.

Blue Glass Genie Bottle Blenko

So what couldn't I resist this time? Guess before clicking. A few of you will get it right.

Yay! I have been scouring eBay and vintage stores for about a year to find the perfect piece of glass for a corner created in the master bath remodel over a year ago.

Slowly I narrowed the field of choices down to genie bottles (glass decanters) because of their height and beauty. Plus I am a sucker for glass. After much clicking, I decided I preferred a decanter without dimpling or texture. In blue or green please. Amber and purple seem to be common.

Ta da! This could potentially be a Blenko. Or a no name. I don't care. It is magnificent.

Good stuff!

Postscript: Found this piece of glass 100% ID'd over at Mid Mod Mom:  a teal Blenko decanter by Winslow Anderson.

And, I'll leave you with this mid-century treasure. Walking through Old Town Fullerton last Saturday, I spotted this church. Looks mid-century to me, sixties potentially. Don't you think? I scoured the internet but, alas, no history on this lovely lady.

Check out the sign. Isn't it incredible?

I have no idea whether new or old. But First Christian Church knows how to do signs.

And when you get up close, the parishioners left a secret message buried in the mosaic tile.

Nice, huh?

Something is so satisfying about the whole mid-century modern treasure hunting process--architecture and decor. Hard to explain. But I know all of you TOTALLY get it.

  2. I knew that blue glass looked pretty cool yesterday!

Next time you're in Fullerton, be sure to visit the tracts of Eichler houses. When we were there a few years ago some of them were rather worse for the years, but I think they're being bought up and restored. Info here: http://www.fullertonheritage.org/Resources/archstyles/eichler.htm

  3. OH YAY! You got some glass. My eyes went straight to the glass. I love Blenko and it sure looks like one. But really who cares... it's SWEET!

  4. The church is really cool...and so is your Blenko piece. As far as I can tell without actually picking it up, it's the large version of the #920 by Winslow Anderson. We have one just like yours in the store now.

It doesn't have the characteristics any of the imitations I'm familiar with. The Pilgrim knock-off has a more rounded stopper. There's one Bischoff version with a thicker neck and shorter stopper and another with a more rounded bottom and little pinched protrusions of glass, and they usually have clear stoppers.

    1. DANA!!! You are the best. I went and checked out your link and looked at the bottle close and hard. It is the same one! And I even commented on that post. So I saw it first on your blog, then saw it in the store and HAD to buy it. How WEIRD is the internet???? Of course you planted the idea in my head.

  5. Beautiful spot for the glorious blue genie bottle. When you were about 3, you visited the seconds shop at the Blenko factory. An early introduction to the Blenko oeuvre!

  6. Hi Rebecca, Just came across this site. The church you took pictures of has been in Fullerton for over 100 years in that same location. The building itself was built in the 70's....but the sign was brand new. The church was lucky enough to have an amazing artist create the sign for us. Thank you for the love you posted on her incredible work!
