flea market pottery finds: bauer and a question

A few weekends ago I went to the Long Beach Antique Market. I was stunned and amazed at the truly fair pricing and and the quality of the merchandise. Even though I was really only on a scouting mission for future mid-century modern purchases, I can't go to an outdoor market and NOT partake of the wares. Seriously?

It is extremely easy to glance at this table and see exactly what caught my eye based on past posts.

Who guessed right?

Not hard, huh?

I was just strolling past a random table filled with random objects. I asked the vendor, "How much?" He said, "$85 but I'll sell it to you for $15." A unique approach. I was too shy to offer $10, but my scouring of eBay let me know that between $10 and $15 was probably about right. My favorite search, in order to price my own items for sale on eBay or understand how much things are really worth, is to click eBay "Advanced Search," enter an item description and check "Sold Listings." The truth is always in what people are willing to pay for things.

This lazy susan set has no markings except for the 3 divots on the bottom from the kiln process, but is clearly mid-century and probably California pottery by the colors. It is too thin and fragile feeling to be Bauer.

I also grabbed a white Bauer pot, fairly reasonably priced at $35 (but not cheap) from the wire plant stand guy of the previous post. I am always game for another Bauer pot. Or two.

On Sunday, I arranged my latest acquisitions for a little private last day of summer goodbye. We really only have had about two weeks of pleasant sunny summer weather. So we barely got to say hello.

Outside it is already getting cooler earlier.

So inside we went.

  2. I know - as much as we love our finds for themselves, paying next to nothing really adds a sheen!

  3. Years ago, I found a pink and black lazy susan exactly like that at a little hole-in-the-wall place, but my turntable wasn't in good shape like yours is. I think we sold it in the antique mall booth before we even opened the store. I really have a soft spot for them, because I remember my grandmother serving out of one frequently. Hers had the two greens that you have, plus yellow and maroon. I love your color combination. Cool finds!

  4. Come a few miles north where you can still get your al fresco on. And I agree--never too many pots (although another member of my household has a different point of view).

    1. I really like having a ton of pots. I put orchids in them when the mood strikes and fill them with drug store poinsettias at Christmas. What is not to love?

  5. My feelings exactly! I have a lazy Susan (gah, I hate my name being associated with "lazy", but there you go...) that I use all the time for entertaining. It takes up a lot of storage space when not in use, but worth it. I have a thing for mid century planters, too- never thought of using them for food, though- now I have an excuse to buy more!
