It is as spectacular as you describe, and I agree that it would be better to move it, though I guess the hydraulic lift idea would be suitable considering the house sits only on I-beams.Douglas Camin @ House on Rynkus Hillhttp://www.houseonrynkushill.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-529828493584098531.post-68233649011653873952014-07-24T18:28:57.058-07:002014-07-24T18:28:57.058-07:00Thanks. I don't hold it against Mies that it is so impractical, because his client was initially game for it. it appears she got cold feet the longer it progressed and the more money she sunk into it. Plus, maybe annoyed when Mies' attentions went elsewhere... Even as an architect/client relationship. It is possible they weren't involved personally at all except in the building of the home, and she may have been a little shocked that his attentions were just business. I have seen it before.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03635768533679313199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-529828493584098531.post-21186472933897897282014-07-22T15:20:00.976-07:002014-07-22T15:20:00.976-07:00I love the gossip! However, from what we learned on tour and by reading, it was her own darn fault. She gave him free rein at the beginning to construct this kind of showpiece. She got frustrated that it went way over budget and was somewhat impractical. Although, the docent told me that she really didn't mind how impractical it was, she just wanted the wardrobe. Let me state one more time... the bathrooms have not one cabinet or drawer. Not a one.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03635768533679313199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-529828493584098531.post-45872956272616028722014-07-21T08:41:19.481-07:002014-07-21T08:41:19.481-07:00It is a toy sort of. I always thought it was in New England somewhere. An incredible house - but more like a toy than a home. But I've never heard the client and architect background - so interesting, like how purist some people are to one detail, that they miss the likely intent or big picture.

Historic preservation regardless of land issues and flooding, with such a great piece of architecture. Or the architect's disregard of storage and working out that picture. No wonder my mother said no man should be allowed design a kitchen, her special place - or was it a closet?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
